I am not usually one for sports or even hockey for the matter. I usually just sit there, confused by Tiff's hockey jargon and her mini heart attacks everytime the puck goes remotely near Luongo. But today, as our whole entire nation gathered infront of their television sets for the Gold Medal Game, I found myself shouting and bellowing, "LUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!" along with with my family who, like me, knows nothing about hockey. Even though USA tied with us less than 30 seconds away from victory, our team didn't lose hope and somehow managed to pull it together in overtime. By the end of the game, there was such an overwhelming sense of pride and unity. It was enough to make you feel patriotic, which is a rare spectacle for Canadians outside of Molsen Canadian (which by the way, is an American-owned brand) commercials. The Olympics have had a great run, and this was the perfect way to end it: with tons of bro-mance and telling the States to SUCK IT (Haha... just kidding, Amy and Allen...). Canada, still a young country with a minimal amount of history, made history today.
The people of Canada are usually known as being mediocre and unwilling to fight. We are seen as apologetic, polite and peaceful. We are not usually known for being the best at anything or for our nationalism, but today, we are.
