The Music Dep. has always been a huge influence in my life, but being forced to articulate how I feel about it made me realize how much I'm actually going to miss it all. I can't help but to feel nostalgia the moment anyone starts talking about the highlights of being part of Choir and Band - the music tours, the laughter and the bonding. Oh goodness, the bonding. Half the time, it's not even about the music. It's about the community and just being able to find your place in the mess of things. It's about being with people who love what they do.
Looking back on the first day Abby and I stepped into jazzband, completely scared to death, and comparing it to today just shows how much we've grown. We're slightly less awkward, completely comfortable and a lot more grounded, and somewhere inbetween it all, we made about a million memories*. And there will be days when I'm staring at the clock, waiting for Band to end, and I'd much rather go home and sleep than stay afterschool for Jazz, but when it comes down to it, I know the Music Room is home.
I might just be saying this, 'cause I'm all feel-good from spending the weekend with people I might not have ever became friends with if it weren't for the Music Program, but I'm probably going to shed a tear or two at the Final Concert this year.
*I was debating about going into detail about specific memories.. But then I realized that this post would never end if I did.

don't worry, hon. It won't be AT the concert that you cry, seeing as you'll be SO FREAKING EXCITED to have had an amazing concert or won an award or being with friends or whatever. It'll be when you go home and think, "Oh wow, that was the last one." Or the day after when you have a free band class for exam prep or whatever and you realize that's it.
I get nostalgic sometimes still. But I like who I am now a lot more than who I was then, and it's only because I stepped out of the music room and into a whole new life.
I still love music though. Choir is definitely my favourite class at King's. And I have a "music department" section on my wall of pictures...slash a "san fran" section =P
